RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Neodymium-iron-boron magnets have been suggested as a contemporary method for accelerating the process of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). A limited number of clinical trials evaluated their effectiveness in accelerating OTM which is desirable for both orthodontists and patients. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a low-intensity static magnetic field (SMF) in accelerating upper canine retraction movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients (mean age 20.76 ± 2.9 years) with their orthodontic treatment decision to extract the upper and lower first premolars due to bimaxillary protrusion malocclusion were included in this split-mouth study. Canine retraction was performed using Nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) closed-coil springs (150 g of force on each side). The experimental side received SMF via an auxiliary wire that carried 4-neodymium iron-born magnets with an air gap of 2 mm between the magnets to produce a magnetic field density of 414 mT in the region corresponding to the lateral ligament of the upper canine. To determine the rate of upper canine retraction and upper molar drift, alginate impressions were taken once a month to create plaster casts, which were analyzed digitally via a three-dimensional method. RESULTS: The rate of upper canine retraction was significantly greater (P < 0.05) on the SMF side than that on the control side during the first and second months, with an overall duration (19.16%) that was greater than that on the control side. The peak acceleration occurred during the second month (38.09%). No significant differences in upper molar drift were detected between the experimental and control sides (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: A low-intensity static magnetic field was effective at accelerating upper canine retraction. The difference between the two sides was statistically significant but may not be clinically significant. The SMF did not affect upper molar drift during the upper canine retraction phase. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The trial was retrospectively registered at the ISRCTN registry ( ISRCTN59092624 ) (31/05/2022).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To prove the effectiveness of the low-intensity laser radiation application in the treatment of wounds of different origin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The clinical study involved 110 persons, divided into 55 subjects in both the study and control groups. The patients of the study group were exposed to the long-wave short-pulse neodymium laser immediately and within 35 days after interventions with a skin incision using it, in a way that wound treated with laser received low-level laser therapy. The control group patients' wounds were treated with standard methods by the means of topical drugs corresponding to the clinical manifestations of the wound process in each particular case. The study was carried out in the hospital of the department of maxillofacial and plastic surgery of the dental complex of the «Russian University of Medicine¼ from 2019 to 2022, and further conservative treatment was conducted in the department of dermatology and cosmetology of the University Hospital of the Medical Graduate School (Institute) of the RSSU. All wounds were classified into three groups for the convenience of systematization and formation of a generalized treatment protocol for postoperative surgical wounds. RESULTS: The objectivity and optimality of the chosen by us actions were confirmed in the conducted work. The formed scars were visually assessed on the POSAS scale at the end of the treatment by patients and 4 independent doctors, as well as each scar was visually assessed by four independent doctors and patients. At the end of the study we formed and proposed an algorithm for the treatment of surgical wounds of various origins. The parameters of the Aerolase Neo Light Pod neodymium laser for the treatment of patients with different types of skin wounds were clinically determined. Experimentally proven properties of the Aerolase Neo Light Pod neodymium laser on accelerating the healing process of surgical wounds through photobiomodulation mechanism support their regeneration with the formation of negligible normotrophic scars, as well as reduce the length of patients' treatment in surgical hospitals, as compared to patients receiving standard external drugs.

RESUMO

A 62-year-old female patient presented with no improvement in vision 10 days after undergoing cataract extraction in the right eye. The unaided visual acuity in the right eye was 0.1, and examination with a slit lamp revealed the presence of the intraocular lens with an increased gap between the intraocular lens and the posterior capsule. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography showed a distance of 3.236 mm between the posterior capsule and the posterior surface of the intraocular lens. Based on the medical history, ocular examination, and auxiliary examinations, a diagnosis of right eye capsular blockage syndrome was made. Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was performed at the anterior capsule outside the optical zone of the intraocular lens. One week later, the posterior capsule adhered to the posterior surface of the intraocular lens, and there was a significant improvement in vision compared to before the procedure.

RESUMO

Capsulotomy with neodymium-doped yttriumaluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser is an effective treatment for posterior capsule opacification following cataract surgery. A wide opening of the posterior capsule associated with the ruptured anterior hyaloid can cause anterior chamber vitreous prolapse. Two patients who developed angle-closure glaucoma associated with vitreous prolapse following Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy were successfully treated with antiglaucoma medication and peripheral iridotomies. Patient identification for potential risk factors and a careful postoperative follow-up are essential to avoid these serious complications.

RESUMO

The antioxidant capabilities of nanoparticles are contingent upon various factors, including their shape, size, and chemical composition. Herein, novel Nd-doped CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized and the neodymium content was varied to investigate the synergistic impact on the antioxidant properties of CeO2 nanoparticles. Incorporating Nd3+ induced changes in lattice parameters and significantly altered the morphology from nanoparticles to nanorods. The biological activity of Nd-doped CeO2 was examined against pathogenic bacterial strains, breast cancer cell lines, and antioxidant models. The antibacterial and anticancer activities of nanoparticles were not observed, which could be associated with the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio. Notably, the incorporation of neodymium improved the antioxidant capacity of CeO2. Machine learning techniques were employed to forecast the antioxidant activity to enhance understanding and predictive capabilities. Among these models, the random forest model exhibited the highest accuracy at 96.35%, establishing it as a robust computational tool for elucidating the biological behavior of Nd-doped CeO2 nanoparticles. This study presents the first exploration of the influence of Nd3+ on the structural, optical, and biological attributes of CeO2, contributing valuable insights and extending the application of machine learning in predicting the therapeutic efficacy of inorganic nanomaterials.

RESUMO

The recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) including neodymium (Nd) and dysprosium (Dy) from NdFeB permanent magnets has become one of the main ways to solve the increased demand for rare earth. Herein, n-dodecyl phosphate (DPPA) was used for the first time as the adsorption functional group donor, sodium alginate as the substrate, and calcium chloride solution as the reactive solvent, a hybrid hydrogel adsorbent DPPA/CaALG was synthesized by sol-gel method for application in the adsorption and separation of Nd and Dy from the Co-Nd-Dy ternary system. SEM-EDS, and N2 adsorption-desorption analysis showed the successful preparation of DDPA/CaALG with mesoporous structure. Batch experiments showed the superiority of the hybrid hydrogel for the good selective adsorption of Nd and Dy, such as large adsorption capacity (Nd: 162.5 mg/g, Dy: 183.5 mg/g), and no adsorption for Co. FT-IR, XPS showed that PO and P-O groups are involved in the adsorption process of Nd and Dy as electron acceptors, where the ion exchange of P-OH is dominant. Furthermore, the chemical properties of ligands and complexes were analyzed by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and revealed their adsorption behaviors as well as the competition between different metal ions.

RESUMO

Objective: To exploring the regulatory effect of miR-29a on the transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) /Smad homolog 3 (Smad3) pathway during the process of rare earth neodymium oxide (Nd(2)O(3)) induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice. Methods: In March 2021, 72 SPF grade C57/BL6J male mice were selected and randomly divided into a control group, Nd(2)O(3) group, Nd(2)O(3)+miR-29a agomir group, and Nd(2)O(3)+NC agomir group, with 18 mice in each group. The Nd(2)O(3) group, Nd(2)O(3)+miR-29a agomir group, and Nd(2)O(3)+NC agomir group were treated with non exposed tracheal instillation, with a dust concentration of 250 mg/ml and a dust volume of 0.1 ml. The control group was given the same volume of physiological saline. After exposure to Nd(2)O(3), 0.1 ml (5 nmol) of miR-29a agomir was injected into the tail vein of mice in the Nd(2)O(3)+miR-29a agomir group every 3 days, while 0.1 ml of NC agomir was injected into the tail vein of mice in the Nd(2)O(3)+NC agomir group. On the 7 th, 14 th, and 28 th days after dust exposure, 6 mice were killed in each group, and the lung tissue of the mice was taken out. HE staining was used to observe the pathological status of the mouse lung tissue; ELISA method was used to detect the levels of TGF-ß1 and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) in lung tissue; Use qRT-PCR detection method to detect the expression level of TGF-ß1 mRNA; Using immunofluorescence assay to detect the expression level of Smad3 in mouse lung tissue; Use bioinformatics websites such as TargetScan7 and miRDB to predict the target gene of miR-29a. When the metrological date were satisfied with normal distribution, Mean±SD was used for comparison between groups, t test was used for two indepent samples, and LSD method was used when the variance was homogeneity in pairwise comparison. Results: HE staining showed that the Nd(2)O(3) group of mice showed obvious infiltration of inflammatory cells and structural disorder of alveoli in the early stage of lung tissue. At 28 days, the collagen fibers in the mouse lung tissue increased and the lung tissue showed fibrotic honeycomb like changes. The degree of pulmonary fibrosis in the Nd(2)O(3)+miR-29a agomir group of mice was significantly reduced; The content of TGF-ß1 and CTGF in the lung tissue of mice in the Nd(2)O(3)+miR-29a agomir group was lower than that in the Nd(2)O(3)+NC agomir group (P<0.05) ; The relative expression level of TGF-ß1 in the lung tissue of mice in the Nd(2)O(3)+miR-29a agomir group was lower than that in the Nd(2)O(3)+NC agomir group (P<0.05) ; The expression level of Smad3 in the nucleus of the Nd(2)O(3)+miR-29a agomir group was lower than that of the Nd(2)O(3)+NC agomir group (P<0.05). The prediction results of bioinformatics websites have found 152 downstream target genes related to miR-29a, among which FBN1, MAP2K6, KPNB1, COL1A2, SNIP1, LAMC1, and SP1 genes may be related to the regulatory effect of miR-29a on TGF-ß1/Smad3 signaling pathway. Conclusion: miR-29a may affect lung fibrosis induced by rare earth Nd(2)O(3) exposure in mice by regulating TGF-ß1/Smad3 signaling pathway. Overexpression of miR-29a may inhibit TGF-ß1/Smad3 signaling pathway and reduce the degree of pulmonary fibrosis in mice.

RESUMO

Using organic waste and residue streams to be turned into valuable and greener materials for various applications has proven an efficient and suitable strategy. In this work, two green materials (nanosponges and a polymer) were synthesized using potato peels and applied for the first time to adsorb and recover Neodymium (Nd3+) from aqueous solutions. The recovery of Nd3+ that belongs to the rare earth elements has attracted important interest due to its/their importance in several industrial and technological applications. The fine potato peel waste (FPPW) polymer presented an irregular shape and porous surface. At the same time, the ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) nanosponges had uniform distribution with regular and smooth shapes. ß-CD nanosponges exhibited a much higher total carboxyl content (4.02 mmol g-1) than FPPW (2.50 mmol g-1), which could impact the Nd3+ adsorption performance because carboxyl groups can interact with cations. The adsorption capacity increased with the increase of the pH, reaching its maximum at pHs 6-7 for ß-CD nanosponges and 4-7 for FPPW polymer. The kinetic and equilibrium data were well-fitted by General order and Liu models. ß-CD nanosponges attained adsorption capacity near 100 mg Nd per gram of adsorbent. Thermodynamic and statistical physical results corroborated that the adsorption mechanism was due to electrostatic interaction/complexation and that the carboxyl groups were important in the interactions. ß-CD nanosponges (three cycles of use) were more effective than FPPW (one cycle of use) in the regeneration. Finally, ß-CD nanosponges could be considered an eco-friendly adsorbent to recover Nd3+ from aqueous matrices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is characterized by the presence of telangiectases and larger arteriovenous malformations in different organs. Mucocutaneous telangiectases can bleed and become an aesthetic concern, impairing quality of life (QoL). However, the best treatment approach has not been defined yet. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of dual wavelength sequential 595/1064nm laser (DWSL) compared to 1064nm laser (Nd:YAG) alone. Secondarily, to evaluate QoL impairment in HHT patients, and its improvement with laser therapy. METHODS: A comparative randomized split-body double-blinded prospective study (DWSL vs Nd:YAG). Demographic, clinical and treatment characteristics were recorded. The severity and degree of improvement were evaluated by three blinded examiners who scored pre-treatment and post-treatment pictures on a 5-point scale. Patients fulfilled Skindex-29 and FACE-Q® tests and assessed procedure-associated pain and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: 111 treatment areas (55 treated with DWSL and 56 with Nd:YAG) from 26 patients were analyzed. The median number of laser sessions was 2 (interquartile range [IQR] 2-4; mean 2.90 vs 2.88, respectively). The median improvement score, irrespective of location, was significantly higher for Nd:YAG compared to DWSL: 3 (IQR 2-3; mean 2.61) vs 2 (IQR 2-3; mean 2.32), p=0.031. Both FACE-Q index and Skindex-29 test results improved significantly (p<0.001), and 92.4% patients reported a high degree of satisfaction (≥8). No severe adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS: DWSL and Nd:YAG laser are convenient, safe and effective treatment options for mucocutaneous telangiectases in HHT patients. However, Nd:YAG delivered better results with better tolerability. QoL was significantly improved by both treatments.

RESUMO

The damage excessive neodymium (Nd) causes to animals and plants should not be underestimated. However, there is little research on the impact of pH and associated ions on the toxicity of Nd. Here, a biotic ligand model (BLM) was expanded to predict the effects of pH and chief anions on the toxic impact of Nd on wheat root elongation in a simulated soil solution. The results suggested that Nd3+ and NdOH2+ were the major ions causing phytotoxicity to wheat roots at pH values of 4.5-7.0. The Nd toxicity decreased as the activities of H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ increased but not when the activities of K+ and Na+ increased. The results indicated that H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ competed with Nd for binding sites. An extended BLM was developed to consider the effects of pH, H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+, and the following stability constants were obtained: logKNdBL = 2.51, logKNdOHBL = 3.90, logKHBL = 4.01, logKCaBL = 2.43, and logKMgBL = 2.70. The results demonstrated that the BLM could predict the Nd toxicity well while considering the competition of H+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and the toxic species Nd3+ and NdOH2+ for binding sites.

RESUMO

Full clearance and no side effects method of treating enlarged veins was successfully accomplished by one laser session. This is the ambition and dream of both dermatologists and patients. Most vascularity treatment protocols had shown some unpleasant adverse effects. The purpose of the present work is to work out, in advance, the accurate dose of laser pulse duration and fluence in order to treat varicose veins in the face, arms and legs with no adverse effects. This mission required the calculation of the exact rise in temperature of the enlarged vein; prior to laser treatment. These pre-calculated temperature rise values were tested on 20 subjects in order to have the best clinical outcomes; using fundamental frequency (1064 nm) pulsed Nd: YAG laser. This work necessitated the use of pulse length (15-30 ms), spot size (3, 5 mm), fluence (110-190 J/cm2) and skin cooling temperature (3-18 °C). Cooling of the skin before and after the treatment was needed to guarantee ultimate impactful results without side effects.

RESUMO

In this study, we emphasize the critical role of sample pretreatment. We report on the behavior of NdFeB magnet samples exposed to four different acid media for digestion. NdFeB magnets are becoming a significant source of neodymium, a rare-earth element critical to many technologies and a potential substitute for traditional mining of the element. To address this, we meticulously tested nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, and citric acid, all at a concentration of 1.6 M, as economical and environmentally friendly alternatives to the concentrated mineral acids commonly used in the leaching of these materials. The pivotal stage involves the initial characterization of samples in the solid state using SEM-EDX and XPS analysis to obtain their initial composition. Subsequently, the samples are dissolved in the four aforementioned acids. Finally, neodymium is quantified using ICP-OES. Throughout our investigation, we evaluated some analytical parameters to determine the best candidate for performing the digestion, including time, limits of detection and quantification, accuracy, recovery of spike samples, and robustness. After careful consideration, we unequivocally conclude that 1.6 M nitric acid stands out as the optimal choice for dissolving NdFeB magnet samples, with the pretreatment of the samples being the critical aspect of this report.

RESUMO

Organic phosphonates have been widely used in various industries and are ubiquitous in wastewaters, and efficient removal of phosphonates is still a challenge for the conventional processes because of the severe interferences from the complex water constitutions. Herein, an Nd-based nanocomposite (HNdO@PsAX) was fabricated by immobilizing hydrated neodymium oxide (HNdO) nanoparticles inside a polystyrene anion exchanger (PsAX) to remove phosphonates from high-salinity aqueous media. Batch experiments demonstrated that HNdO@PsAX had an excellent adsorption capacity (∼90.5 mg P/g-Nd) towards a typical phosphonate (1-hydrox-yethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, HEDP) from the background of 8 g/L NaCl, whereas negligible HEDP adsorption was achieved by PsAX. Attractively, various coexisting substances (humic acid, phosphate, citrate, EDTA, metal ligands, and anions) exerted negligible effects on the HEDP adsorption by HNdO@PsAX under high salinity. FT-IR and XPS analyses revealed that the inner-sphere complexation between HEDP and the immobilized HNdO nanoparticles is responsible for HEDP adsorption. Fixed-bed experiments further verified that HNdO@PsAX was capable of successively treating more than 4500 bed volumes (BV) of a synthetic high-salinity wastewater (1.0 mg P/L of HEDP), whereas only ∼2 BV of effective treatment capacity was received by PsAX. The exhausted HNdO@PsAX was amenable to a complete regeneration by a binary NaOHNaCl solution without significant loss in capacity. The capability in removing other organic phosphonates and treating a real electroplating wastewater by HNdO@PsAX was further validated. Generally, HNdO@PsAX exhibited a great potential in efficiently removing phosphonates from high-salinity wastewater.

RESUMO

Rare earth element neodymium (Nd) is widely used in industry and agriculture, which may result in the pollution of aquatic environment. In this study, we exposed zebrafish with 10, 50, and 100 µg/L Nd for four weeks. The results showed that Nd could be accumulated in fish gill and Nd accumulation affected the equilibrium of nutrient elements. Nd decreased the antioxidant enzymes' activity and gene expression level, but enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, various concentration of Nd treatments inhibited Nrf2 signaling in gill. To examine the critical role of GSK-3ß/Nrf2 signaling on ROS generation under Nd stress, we further interfered gsk-3ß gene in zebrafish under 100 µg/L Nd exposure. The result showed that gsk-3ß gene interference induced Nrf2 signaling as well as the expression and activity of antioxidant enzymes in fish gill. In all, Nd could be accumulated in fish gill, and the signaling of GSK-3ß/Nrf2 was involved in regulating ROS generation under Nd treatments.

RESUMO

During the mining of rare earth minerals, the application of neodymium-containing manures, and the treatment of spent neodymium iron boron magnet, the generation of ammonia wastewater containing neodymium is increasing. Thus, the effects of neodymium (Nd(III)) on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) were investigated from the aspects of performance, kinetics, statistics, microbial community and sludge morphology, and the recovery strategy of EDTA-2Na wash was discussed. The nitrogen removal efficiency of the Anammox reactor decreased significantly and eventually collapsed at the Nd(III) dosing levels of 20 and 40 mg L-1, respectively. And the toxicity of Nd(III) to AnAOB was determined by the amount internalized into the cells. The EDTA-2Na wash successfully increased the total nitrogen removal rate (TNRR) of Nd(III)-inhibited Anammox to 41.60% of its initial value within 30 days, and the modified Boltzmann model accurately simulated this recovery process. The transient and extended effects of Nd(III), self-recovery, and EDTA-2Na wash on Anammox were effectively assessed using a one-sample t-test. 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated that Nd(III) remarkably decreased the relative abundance of Planctomycetes and Candidatus Brocadia. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) revealed crystal-like neodymium particles on the surface of Anammox sludge. The above-mentioned results demonstrate that the concentration of Nd(III) should be below the toxicity threshold (20 mg L-1) when treating ammonia wastewater containing neodymium by Anammox, and also emphasize the importance of an appropriate recovery strategy.

RESUMO

Addressing our climate urgency requires various renewable and low-carbon technologies, which often contain critical materials that face potential supply risks. Existing studies on the critical material implications of green transition have used various methodologies, each with pros and cons in providing a system understanding. Here, we integrated the dynamic material flow analysis and input-output modeling principles in an integrated multi-regional waste input-output model to assess the demand-supply balance and recycling potentials for cobalt, lithium, neodymium, and dysprosium under various energy scenarios projected to 2050. We show that although all four critical materials are likely to face strong growth in annual demand (as high as a factor of 25 compared to the 2015 level), only cobalt has a higher cumulative demand by 2050 than the known reserves. Nevertheless, considering the sheer scale of demand increase and long lead time of opening or expanding new mines, recycling efforts are urgently needed to supplement primary supply toward global green transition. This model integration is proven useful and can be extended to more critical materials and green technologies.

RESUMO

The fields of biosensitivity and biological imaging have received a lot of attention from rare earth-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). However, owing to the relatively large energy difference of rare earth ions, biological sensitivity based on UCNPs is restricted to detect at low temperature. Here, we design core-shell-shell NaErF4:Yb@Nd2O3@SiO2 UCNPs as a dual-mode bioprobe that produces blue, green, and red multi-color upconversion emissions at extremely low temperatures between 100 K and 280 K. Based on the thermally coupled energy levels (TCELs) of Er3+ (2H11/2 and 4S3/2) and Nd3+ (4F5/2 and 4F3/2) at 100 K, the greatest relative sensitivity (SR) approaches 12.7% K-1. NaErF4:Yb@Nd2O3@SiO2 injection is used to achieve blue upconversion emission imaging of frozen heart tissue, showing that this UCNP can serve as a low-temperature sensitive biological fluorescence.

RESUMO

Rare earth elements (REE) are valuable raw materials in our modern life. Extensive REE application from electronic devices to medical instruments and wind turbines, and non-uniform distribution of these resources around the world, make them strategically and economically important for countries. Current REE physical and chemical mining and recycling methods could have negative environmental consequences, and biologically-mediated techniques could be applied to overcome this issue. In this study, the bioextraction of cerium oxide and neodymium oxide nanoparticles (REE-NP) by a pure culture Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 (ATCC®14718™) was investigated in batch experiments. Results show that adding up to 1000 ppm CeO2 or Nd2O3 nanoparticles (REE-NP) did not seem to affect the bacterial growth over 14-days contact time. Effect of methylamine hydrochloride as an essential electron donor and carbon source for microbial oxidation and growth was also observed inasmuch as there was approximately no growth when it does not exist in the medium. Although very low concentrations of cerium and neodymium in the liquid phase were measured, concentrations of 45 µg/gcell Ce and 154 µg/gcell Nd could be extracted by M. extorquens AM1. Furthermore, SEM-EDS and STEM-EDS confirmed surface and intracellular accumulation of nanoparticles. These results confirmed the ability of M. extorquens to accumulate REE nanoparticles.
